Houston Pets Alive is a no kill organization that saves animals at risk of euthanasia. They are a non profit organization with many volunteers who help keep the rescue running.
HPA views itself as a safety net for municipal shelters/impound facilities, seeking to reduce euthanasia, pet homelessness, and suffering.
To adopt with them, select a dog you’re interested in, then apply for adoption through their application. They also have a general adoption application if you need help finding the right dog for you. You will then meet the dog, and if you’re a match, you can take your new best friend home!

Abandoned Animal Rescue is located in Magnolia near Houston. This shelter is entirely managed and maintained by volunteers with the goal of creating a safe, no kill rescue for homeless pets.
They opened in 2003 as a tiny shelter in a leased liquor store with a room for spay/neuter surgery and two rooms for cats and dogs. By 2016, they opened a large property that they turned into a kennel, featuring tons of outdoor and indoor space, roomy kennels, and a full clinic.
To adopt with them, fill out their adoption application. You will then interview with an adoption volunteer who will supervise a meet and greet session with as many dogs as you want. If the adoption is approved, your new furry friend goes home with you.

3. Special Pals
Special Pals is located in Houston and is a non profit, no kill shelter. In 2021, they rescued over 1600 animals, while over 1500 were adopted. They have been rescuing animals since 1979 and also have a low cost wellness clinic.
To adopt with them, you may walk through their kennels to see all the dogs looking for a forever home. If you rent your home, you must provide proof of pet approval. If you own other pets, bring proof that they are up to date on all vaccines.

Houston Humane Society Animal Wellness Clinic is a low cost clinic that also cares for adoptable dogs. All dogs who stay with them are given lots of love, walks, socialization, training, and enrichment toys until they are matched with their permanent families, no matter how long it takes.
They are a non profit clinic that receives no federal, state, or local funding, relying solely on donations. They are committed to the Five Freedoms: freedom from hunger/thirst, discomfort, pain, fear, and to express normal behavior.
Once at their adoption center, you may browse the available dogs. If you are interested in a dog, you will be able to meet them. If it’s a match, you will then speak with an adoption counselor to finalize the adoption process.

Three Little Pitties Rescue is located in Friendswood near Houston and is a non profit, no kill shelter. They have saved over 9000 pets since 2018.
They make regular trips across Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Utah to pick up dogs who need a forever home. All animals are vetted and rehabilitated in foster homes or stay at their rescue. They adopt pets out to states outside of Texas, such as Washington, Oregon, Utah, Idaho, Colorado, Nevada, and BC, Canada.
To adopt with them, view their available pets and fill out an application. If you are not in Houston, they are able to transport your pet to the specific states listed above. All dogs are spayed/neutered, vetted, and microchipped.

Looking for a small dog? Miniature Schnauzer Rescue is located in Houston and is a no kill, all volunteer rescue facility. They utilize foster homes to socialize, train, and rehabilitate their dogs.
Since opening in 2000, they have rescued over 3000 miniature schnauzers from the streets, puppy mills, and owners who have surrendered them. Their adoption fees include any needed veterinary procedures, spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, and heartworm testing.
To adopt with them, fill out the application form. If there is a specific dog you have your eye on, please note that in the form. You will then be contacted to discuss the next steps and a meet and greet.

DREAM Dachshund Rescue Education & Adoption Mission is located in Houston. They are a non profit, no kill rescue that cares for abandoned dachshunds until they find their forever homes.
Working closely with local veterinarians, all dachshunds are given quality medical care, then placed in a foster home. DREAM is also a resource for information regarding behavior training, proper nutrition, spay/neuter surgery, and more.
